Miriam Knibbeler – Wax sculpturesA crouching, bald human figure balances on a weathered wooden post in Not Yet. The matte, pale wax skin still bears the marks of modelling. The body is drawn up, eyes closed, arms hanging loosely along the wood. A silence settles that scrapes: this is a being not yet fully formed — or already slipping out of human shape. In Sleeping Moose the physical tension shifts into an animal form. An elastic, sleeping body hangs heavily over the edge of a table. The soft material looks almost cold and flesh-like, as if a figure loses its form the moment consciousness leaves it.The bronze Becoming stands as counterpart. Where the wax sculptures appear temporary and pliable, bronze carries an ancient, ritual weight. The figure recalls pagan idols and hybrid beings. Through wax and bronze a gathering of bodies takes shape — hovering between human, animal and fossil, caught in the instant just before or just after a transformation.

Biography Miriam Knibbeler | Wellington, New Zealand, 1981

Miriam Knibbeler creates expressive, quiet sculptures of people, animals and hybrid forms. Her work grows from a deep affinity with life. She graduated from the art academy in Groningen in 2012.

Working with classical materials such as bronze and ceramics, as well as more unconventional ones like wax, Knibbeler explores the emotional and symbolic potential of matter itself. Wax in particular holds a unique duality: tangible and physical, yet translucent and ethereal — present and absent at once. This lends her sculptures a particular softness, a restrained sensuality and an almost breathing presence.

Through subtle shifts in scale and distortion she introduces a hint of surrealism that is often felt before it is seen. Her sculptures are poetic, intimate and sensual; they explore themes of transformation and corporeality, often with a mystical undertone.

With her artistic precision and symbolic visual language, Knibbeler situates herself within the classical sculptural tradition, while her approach to form and material gives the work a distinctly contemporary and deeply personal character.
