Taco Yutong Huo - Territorium
Wat gebeurt er met een territorium wanneer de heerser vervaagt?
In the diptych 'A landscape that no longer knows its hunter', Taco Yutong Huo explores a world in which the guiding force—the hunter, humankind or central authority—has disappeared. What remains is not a silent ruin, but an autonomous, proliferating climate. Lines reminiscent of muscle tissue, animal patterns, botanical roots and organic remnants merge into a landscape no longer defined by hunting or dominion, but by its own metabolism.
Drawing on his background in biology, Huo approaches culture and matter as a continuous process of digestion, mutation and erosion. Here, a territory is not a clearly bounded area, but a dynamic and unstable condition. Without the controlling gaze of the 'hunter', the painting grows from its own remnants. Forms merge, digest and rebuild themselves beyond human frameworks.
"A landscape that no longer knows its hunter' nodigt uit om het begrip territorium te heroverwegen: niet als een bezit dat gecontroleerd wordt, maar als een levend, zichzelf transformerend systeem waarin het verlies van autoriteit de ruimte opent voor een nieuwe, rauwe vorm van bestaan.
BIOGRAPHY
Taco (Yutong) Huo (霍禹同, born in 1993) is a Chinese painter who lives and works in the Netherlands. Drawing on his background in biology, Huo approaches culture as a metabolic system in which experiences are transformed into images, rituals, residual forms and symbolic shapes.
His oil paintings are created through layering, shifting, covering, erosion and reconstruction. Bodies, animals, ruins, domestic objects and architectural fragments appear as unstable forms shaped by repetition, material pressure and cultural memory. Huo's work traces the 'afterlife' of symbols: how they persist, mutate and continue to act after their original authority has diminished.
Informed by biological thought, shamanistic rituals and the continued life of cultural forms, his practice examines how meaning persists without certainty and how painting can make room for unresolved questions about existence, perception and authority.
