Nonna Hoogland – Ceramics and gouache
An abundance of pearls, graceful flowers and gleaming glaze: at first sight, Nonna Hoogland’s ceramic vases immediately seduce the viewer. Yet this classical beauty functions as a lure. A closer look reveals a fierce and emotional world in which ancient myths and old stories merge seamlessly with contemporary issues.
Hoogland’s Amazons and goddesses cannot be confined to a single role. They embody human complexity in all its facets: powerful and vulnerable, caring and furious at once. Ancient myths of power, transformation and seduction become a mirror for contemporary society. In this way she connects classical motifs to current themes of power relations and physical ideals.
Within this exhibition, each vase marks a bounded territory of its own. The narrative scenes, framed by thorns, garlands and faces, form small inner worlds in which major questions about morality and human behaviour rub against one another. What remains is a direct confrontation that continues to resonate with the viewer.
Biography Nonna Hoogland | Utrecht - 1999
Nonna Hoogland is a visual artist. She graduated with honours from HKU’s Illustration programme in 2023 and has since worked in Utrecht with ceramics, drawing and painting. From a feminist perspective, she connects mythology, art history and current social issues in symbolic narrative images that explore the complexity of being human and question patriarchal structures.
Her work has been shown at OBJECT (Rotterdam), Paper Positions (Berlin), Dutch Design Week and in solo and group exhibitions at Moving Gallery, No Limits Art Castle and EXboot. Alongside her independent practice, she has created murals for Volkshotel and Parnassos, among others, and designed posters and merchandise for Paradiso and various artists and films. She was nominated for the K.F. Hein Art and Design Prize (2026) and previously received the HKU Award and the Manifestations Young Talent Award (both 2023).
Hoogland is currently developing her practice towards an outspoken feminist visual language and more spatial work. She investigates the idea of a fictional matriarchal society as a form of speculative archaeology, developing it into an installation that brings together ceramics, painting and scenography.
