Maaike Meindertsma
In the video works of Maaike Meindertsma, the body is not a self-evident given, but a site of knowledge, tension, and continuous negotiation. Drawing on her background as a gymnast, she explores the limits of physical presence: how the body seeks genuine connection while simultaneously appearing aware of its own constructed nature.
In Shortcut, we see a figure pulling a blue wheeled suitcase through three sharply contrasting landscapes: the cold, wet mudflats of the Ems estuary near Bierum, the hot, arid terrain of Djerba in Tunisia, and a snow-covered landscape in Ansberg. Presented as a three-channel video installation, the work depicts an ordinary, purposeful action—like a traveller making her way with a suitcase. Yet this familiar routine unfolds in environments that are entirely unsuited to wheeled luggage. The action becomes a meditation on displacement and absurdity: the persistence of a familiar, functional routine within surroundings for which it was never intended. It raises the question of whether there is ever a true destination, or whether movement itself is all that remains.
In the work from the series The Knowledge of the Body, the artist walks across a circle of chairs. What appears to be a simple action gradually unfolds into a precise, repetitive performance charged with restrained tension. Here, the body reveals a form of elegant unnaturalness: a virtuosity that is at once vulnerable and acutely self-aware. Balance becomes a ritual, a reminder that our physical selves retain patterns and relationships that the mind is often unable to articulate.
Meindertsma's work embodies a contemporary sensibility in which intimacy and estrangement constantly merge. Her human figures are intensely present, yet subtly uprooted—searching, alert, and curiously solitary in their movements. There is a quiet melancholy in the precision of their actions, as though the body were at once fully surrendered to the world it traverses and, at the same time, observing it with ironic distance.
With Humanoids, she invites us to reflect on what remains of our bodily intelligence in an age in which the human is continually being reconfigured. Between authentic physical experience and a growing sense of artificiality, her work searches for new, fragile forms of presence.
Biography
Maaike Meindertsma (1999, the Netherlands) is a visual artist based in the north of the Netherlands. She graduated from the Fine Art programme at Minerva Academy in 2022. During her studies, and inspired by her background in gymnastics, she developed a strong fascination with movement, the body, and the ways in which we experience our surroundings.
The body forms a recurring point of departure in her work. Meindertsma explores how bodily experience, memory, and consciousness are intertwined, and how the body continuously responds to the world around it. In her early work, the physical body itself often took centre stage. In The Knowledge of the Body (2022), for example, she investigated the knowledge and memories stored within the body, and the precision with which it relates to its environment.
In recent years, her attention has shifted towards moments in which the body itself becomes less visible. As a result, her work moves between presence and absence, between what can be directly perceived and what remains only indirectly felt. This tension has become a central driving force within her artistic practice.
Meindertsma works primarily with audiovisual installations in which research, film, and performance converge. She also creates artists' books and video works. Within her installations, the relationship between the artwork, the space, and the audience plays a central role. Site-specificity, repetition, and a sense of endlessness are recurring themes. By interweaving moving images, gesture, and spatial elements, she creates environments that invite a deeply physical and sensory experience.
Since graduating, Meindertsma has been active as a visual artist in Friesland and Groningen. Her work explores the subtle ways in which body, memory, and environment influence and shape one another.
