Jeanne Lai – Unwalked Walk and Stingfield

Jeanne Lai focuses on the complex relationship between humans and animals. Animals attract her more strongly than people, yet it is precisely in them that she recognises something human. In her work, dependence and dominance exist close together, visible in the way animals appear alongside one another and relate to each other.

In Unwalked Walk staan drie honden dicht bij elkaar.
Their bodies almost form a single whole, while their gazes and postures differ. Red lines run alongside the animals and connect them. The lines provide direction, but also introduce a sense of control.
The dogs seem both independent and bound to one another. Lai uses them to examine relationships in which freedom and dependence coexist, blurring the boundary between the one who determines and the one who follows.

Her paintings leave room for the question of where one individual ends and another begins. This tension exists not only between human and animal, but also within human relationships. Lai’s animals thus become carriers of recognisable, sometimes uncomfortable dynamics.

Biography

Jeanne Lai | Taipei, 2001

Jeanne Lai is a Taiwanese artist living and working in the Netherlands. Her work explores the complex, paradoxical relationships between humans, animals and their environments. She graduated from the Fine Arts department in Taiwan in 2023 and completed her Master of Painting at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen in 2026.

Fascinated by the contrast between resourceful stray dogs in Taiwan and regulated leashed dogs in the Netherlands, Lai investigates the boundary between wildness and socialisation. She translates this dynamic into installations and paintings using wood, metal and reflective surfaces. By playing with perception, she blurs the boundaries between viewer and artwork, nature and artificiality, and human and animal.
