Ferenc Erdok – Humanoids
For the opening exhibition Humanoids, Galerie Postpartum presents two compelling works by Ferenc Erdok, including the monumental painting Crossroads (258 × 144 cm) as the exhibition's central work.
In Crossroads, Erdok places a nude figure at an enigmatic intersection, where a clear, almost digital graphic world merges with the vulnerable tangibility of the human body. Through saturated colours and stylised forms, he creates a tension between the virtual and the real, between choice and estrangement. The painting feels like a contemporary moment of transition: the human being as a hybrid entity, shaped by technology, imagination, and emotion.
In Cheesy Checkpoint, Erdok combines a playful, ironic reference to video game checkpoints with a nude figure placed within a distinctly game-like, almost kitsch environment. The work explores the human as an interactive character: simultaneously player and played, real and virtual, vulnerable and pixelated. With a knowing nod to the "cheesy" clichés of gaming culture, it reveals both the irony and the melancholy of our digital existence.
Erdok's work shares affinities with other contemporary artists who explore the hybrid nature of humanity. Like Jason Freeny, who dissects toy figures, or pop surrealists such as Naoto Hattori and Mark Ryden, Erdok combines nostalgic and digital elements with a deeper reflection on identity and estrangement.
Together, Crossroads and Cheesy Checkpoint embody a contemporary vision of the human: vulnerable, yet composed of multiple layers of reality. Erdok's precise, graphic painting style—equally convincing on both monumental and intimate scales—invites viewers to reflect on where we find ourselves: at the crossroads between the real and the artificial, the past and the present.
Ferenc Erdok (1988), who studied at the Classical Academy in Groningen, has a unique ability to weave together nostalgic, mythological, and contemporary elements. His work is a natural fit for a gallery dedicated to contemporary sensibilities and aesthetics that venture beyond the familiar.
Biography
Ferenc Erdok (1988) lives and works in Groningen, the Netherlands. In 2021, he graduated from the Classical Academy of Painting in Groningen, where he developed a particular fascination for painting from the nude model. This classical foundation continues to serve as an important point of departure in his work.
From an early age, Erdok was captivated by the worlds of cartoons and video games. What began as drawing his favourite characters gradually evolved into creating his own figures, stories, and mythologies. This early fascination with fictional worlds remains a significant source of inspiration within his artistic practice.
In his current work, Erdok brings together classical painting and contemporary visual culture. Using scenes from video games as his point of departure, he reinterprets them through his own compositions, atmosphere, and visual language. A recurring element is the replacement of the original game characters with a nude model. This creates an intriguing contrast between the tangible reality of the human body and the constructed, virtual world of the video game.
Through these images, Erdok explores the ways in which people immerse themselves in digital worlds and how those worlds shape our imagination. At the same time, he employs humour and gentle irony to reference classical themes from art history. His models appear as contemporary counterparts to mythological, religious, or folkloric figures, placed within environments inhabited by icons from popular gaming culture. In doing so, he draws connections between the heroes and symbols of the past and the digital characters that today evoke recognition and meaning across the world.
Alongside his autonomous practice, Erdok gained wider recognition through his appearance on the Dutch television programme Sterren op het Doek, where he painted a portrait of Annechien Steenhuizen. The work demonstrated not only his technical skill as a portrait painter, but also his ability to capture a deeply personal narrative in paint.
Erdok's paintings are distinguished by their vivid, saturated colours, deliberately departing from the more restrained palettes traditionally associated with classical painting. Combining technical mastery, imagination, and humour, he creates works that surprise, resonate, and invite viewers to look anew at both digital and physical reality.
