Herman Noordermeer – Lithographs and paintings
Herman Noordermeer works with extreme precision. In his paintings and large drawing-like compositions he leaves out everything that distracts. What remains are restrained images, wrapped in a thin, misty atmosphere. A man balancing in utter concentration on a tightly stretched wire; birds caught halfway through a fall held still; or a solitary walker on a dark path.
His work grows from a succession of sketches, scribbles and notes. Only when a motif has slowly ripened does he fix it as if time had suddenly stopped. In these quiet scenes, everyday situations coincide with something larger than the moment itself. A simple given such as balancing, falling or walking becomes, with Noordermeer, a symbol of life’s vulnerability and the longing for hold.
Behind the calm of these images lies impressive craftsmanship. Noordermeer makes, among other things, monumental unique lithographs. The craft of stone lithography at this gigantic scale is mastered today by very few. The result is work that invites slowing down and takes the viewer into a territory entirely his own — mysterious and distinct.
